Course description: The goal of the course is to introduce the basic concepts of (abstract) algebraic structures and techniques.

The course will cover Chapters 1 - 17 and selected material from later chapters such as finite fields, and Cayley graphs, of the following required textbook.

Textbook: Joseph Gallian, Contemporary Abstract Algebra, 10th edition (or later editions) ISBN-13: 9781305657960

Homework

There will be a weekly homework set due on every Saturday midnight starting Sept. 10, 2022.
Homework help sessions will be conducted. (Friday 3:00-4:00 Jones 131.)
Of course, help is also available at office hours.

Homework should be scanned and submitted via blackboard.
If you use LaTex to typset the solution, you will get extra credits (additional 5% homework scores).


Challenging problems will be assigned from time to time;
extra-credits will be given to successful (or partially successful) attempts.
